Norway, Part Two: Slowing Down in the Sunnmøre Alps
A journey through the serene beauty of the Sunnmøre Alps, discover charming towns, and experience the breathtaking landscapes that make Norway truly unforgettable.
I hope you enjoyed my last post about conquering Norway's Trolltunga and soaking in the beauty of Bergen. This week, we're slowing things down a bit. Join me as I swap the adrenaline rush of standing on the edge of Trolltunga for some much-needed peace and tranquility, exploring the serene landscapes of the Sunnmøre Alps. The views are just as epic, but this time, it's all about quiet moments and breathtaking scenery.
A short flight from Bergen leads to the land of stunning fjords, Norwegian strawberries, and crystal-clear mountain streams. As the plane passes over the majestic Sunnmøre Alps and countless islands, the beauty of the landscape is already apparent. The flight ends at Vigra, the island airport that connects visitors to Ålesund. The charming city, known for its colorful art nouveau buildings surrounded by mountains and ocean. The memories of first discovering Ålesund's beauty over a decade ago, through a Pinterest search, brings a sense of gratitude as the dream of visiting becomes a reality.
Despite arriving later in the day, the extended daylight hours of late June provided plenty of time to explore Ålesund. After a late dinner at Zuuma Sushi, finishing around 9:30 PM, it still felt like midafternoon. This gave ample opportunity to wander the quiet streets as the cruise ship crowds returned to their vessels. With the sun setting at 11:30 PM, a walk up Mount Aksla offered the perfect way to take in the surrounding beauty, best experienced in the calm of the evening.
Begin your morning in Ålesund with a coffee at Apotekergata No. 5, then explore the treasures at Trankokeriet Antikk. As you stroll through the city’s charming streets, take in the relaxed atmosphere before getting back on the road to continue your Norwegian journey deeper into the fjords.

Discover the best places to stay, dine, and explore in Ålesund and the nearby fjord towns. Plus, I’m sharing one of my all-time favorite spots I’ve stayed at during my travels.
